Now for the beer. The first three tastes were a saison, a Belgian IPA and a Witbier (Belgian style ale). They were followed by an Altbier (German style brown ale), a porter and a Belgian Dubbel. Being a sucker for hops but preferring smooth finishes rather than bitterness, the first three were really on target. Exactly what I love most about craft beer.

The beers on tap (7 total) we tried are unique without exception: the light but deceptively complex Leisure Ale is Watermark's "beer" beer, the Pipestone Porter is delightfully smoky and deep, the twice-mosaic-hopped King Prawn is a New England style IPA with a distinct hint of grapefruit, and the Mitchel's Satyr Saison is wonderfully floral and slightly sour.

Blue Heron Farm (Millersburg, Indiana) is a small family farm that raises good food on “grass and sunshine.”

About the Meat CSA: The CSA program lasts for four months after the share is purchased. Each monthly delivery is neatly packed into reusable tote bags and includes recipes and a selection of meats. The CSA offers a variety of pastured meats, including hamburger, pork sausage, prime cuts, chicken, ground beef, pork chops and hot dogs. Each delivery provides six to eight meals for a couple or four or more meals for a family of four. Blue Heron also offers half and whole cuts of lamb and pigs. C&D Family Farms (Knox, Indiana) raises “happy hogs.” Their philosophy is to treat the animals with kindness and to make the best and most comfortable lives for them. The pigs are able to roam in a large wooded area and have a natural diet of leaves, berries, weeds and acorns. All animals are hormone-, steroid- and antibiotic-free.

Grass is Greener Meats & Products (Bremen, Indiana) is a family farm specializing in heritage breed and pastured meats. They strive to raise the best animals that will produce, in turn, the best taste. Their Red Wattle pork is sold by whole, half or individual cuts. Both the Freedom Ranger chickens and Bourbon Red heritage breed turkeys are pastured. They also sell grass-fed lamb and beef.

Hawkins Family Farm (North Manchester, Indiana) has been owned by the Hawkins family for over 50 years. When they are not hosting farm-to-table dinners or serving farm-fresh pizza, they are fulfilling CSA subscriptions. Their motto, “Growing Community on the Farm,” connotes a desire to share their bounty and love for the land.

Hebron Farms (Vandalia, Michigan) raise chemical-free and grass-fed beef, lamb, pork, poultry, sausages, smoked meats and nitrate-free bacon. Along with a mission statement that promises to maintain a good quality of life for both the family and the animals, the Hebrons insist that the true test of quality is the taste.

This place is a must! This past May, when Nathaniel and I were touring through the Midwest, we stopped here before our show at The Box Factory. Actually, we stopped dead in our tracks after taking one bite of their pretzel chips and the Taxi Driver’s Wife Mussels 21 with Gewürztraminer + thyme + parsley + butter + grilled garlic bread. That grilled garlic bread was to-die-for. And we topped it off with their smoked whitefish salad. The atmosphere is very Brooklyn: clean lines, modern with rustic charm, real candles on the tables, truly enchanted!

Farm House Bakery is run by the most joyful folks we know. They haul it hard in the morning, way before the rooster crows. This is the ultimate family-owned and -operated breakfast joint. You can find Dawn and Virgil rolling dough and pinching piecrusts around 4:30am as the smoker out back works its magic on a batch of chickens. For over six years we have been ordering the maple pecan scone, slightly warmed. I order the vegetarian breakfast burrito, add black beans, a side of hash browns with onion and two containers of their homemade salsa on the side. Nathaniel loves a simple breakfast of two eggs, hash browns (with onion) and a side of their signature thinly sliced smoked chicken breast. (Be sure to add a container of extra dry rub on the side!) This breakfast will wake up all of your senses and start your day off right!

What’s more to say than Bushmill’s Irish smoked salmon paired with a pear and walnut salad? It’s so divine! To finish the meal, we like a slice of the Chocolate Oblivion flourless cake. When Nathaniel was 14 years old, he started performing at their open mic night and a few years later he introduced me to Fiddler’s. Through the years it has become a favorite spot of ours. Especially because it was farm-to-table before farm-to-table became a huge trend. We love the charm, food and mystique of Fiddler’s. If you look closely enough, you can find a black and white photograph of my beloved Grandpa “Sir” hanging on the wall of fame near the piano. Happy eating and hunting! Shine ON!

Not only did we share our first meal together here in 2003, but their classic cheese pizza paired with a large bowl of the Julia Special Salad is enough to have us say it was love at first bite. For over a decade, year after year, we have eaten Rocco’s cheese pizza, loving every bite. And of course we can’t say enough about Linda and Warren Verteramo. We have spent many Saturday nights crashing more of the Verteramo family gatherings than we would care to admit to. You could say that it’s only appropriate for a band named after one of Italy’s most coveted fruits (bergamot) to be a part of Rocco’s extended food-loving family.

Before we stepped into this beautiful pizza heaven we had heard plenty of buzz from all of our friends, and, of course, I read the Edible Michiana article, which lit the fire under us. This place is truly a eat here now Jillian Speece of the Bergamot dishes on the music duo’s top 5 places for great food in Michiana star ratings gem. Let me repeat: Venturi is a brilliant, delicious gem. When we toured through Europe in 2013, we ate some of the best pizza in the world. So when we arrived back in the Midwest we were a bit worried about finding a great Neapolitan pizza. Until we ordered the Margherita Doc with fior di latte, topped with fresh basil at Venturi. Yum! For dessert we always get the panna cotta with extra cherries on top. Gosh, I am getting hungry. Just go here. Do it now.

Jake's Country Meats is a true family farm dedicated to producing premium pasture raised pork, beef, and poultry. Raised in the small farm tradition using local and sustainable practices, Jake's meats are produced from humanely raised animals fed all natural diets. 

Open Tuesday–Sunday for breakfast and lunch and Wednesday–Saturday for dinner. On Thursday nights they serve a traditional Puerto Rican menu.
