“There are no strangers here; only friends you haven’t met yet.”
I first read this quote on the chalkboard at David’s Deli in New Buffalo, MI. It sticks: It embodies the feeling you get when you’re in there, the exchanges you share from one table to the next or when your hands are full and a regular jumps up from his chair to grab the door for you.
One of the fortunate things about running a business in New Buffalo is having David’s Delicatessen nearby. If you are lucky enough to be located in the heart of Harbor Country, there’s a good chance you begin your morning at David’s and have lunch there a couple times a week as well.
David’s is a place that radiates community, from the vendors they work with to their customers and employees. Owners Emma Brewster and Joe Lindsay provide a nourishing place for the stomach and the soul.

People start their day with David’s, and David’s makes sure their day is met with quality. The deli features Intelligentsia coffee that’s brewed with experience, along with an array of reubens and daily seasonal sandwiches that are made with local produce and named with whimsical flare like “Cherry Potter and the Gobbler of Fire” and “Muenster Truck Rally.”

Coffee shops often are places where people meet, but David’s goes beyond that. Every morning there’s a crew of more mature bachelors who meet up for a coffee and some of Emma’s delicious pastries. You can also find a weekly group of cyclists, braking at their halfway point and wetting their whistles on some finely tuned espressos. Wednesday afternoons the back room is filled with a group of knitters who catch up and visit. It’s a place where city officials and local business owners hold meetings. A place where someone who works from home brings her laptop and sets up on a high top for a reuben and emailing. Where local homeschoolers prep for a project or trade magic cards.

Owners Emma and Joe have created a space so warm and welcoming, with provisions so tasty and exciting, there’s no wonder why every morning or afternoon you can walk in and see lots of familiar smiling faces. It’s a meeting point, the hearth of New Buffalo. Hope to meet you there!
