The Brew Werks constantly collaborates with area small businesses. Eco Owl Press owner Rich Fowler can be found at the pub just about every Monday eating a fancy grilled cheese dubbed Touchdown Cheezus and drinking a pint of 1865 amber ale. Since the pub opened, Fowler has designed and printed its menus and posters.
“Not only does the Brew Werks support the community, they actually do business with other local businesses, like Purple Porch and the South Bend Farmers Market,” says Fowler. “That great effort in building the community is a strong draw for me.”
The Brew Werks also strengthens the local community through donations to local not-for-profits. Since opening in the spring of 2014, it has donated close to $30,000 through its Beer4Good program. Each time you enjoy a pint at the Brew Werks, you get a bottle cap that represents a 50-cent donation to one of three community partners: La Casa de Amistad Youth & Community Center, the Music Village and Neighborhood Resources Connection.
Though the snazzy craft beer and menu of gourmet macaroni, grilled cheese and flatbread pizza are what get people in the door, it’s really these many community aspects of the business that keep them coming back.
Tim Finnan, a benefits consultant for Old National Bank, loves the Disinhibited double IPA and the 3-Way Chatter grilled cheese with provolone, smoked cheddar, habanero cheddar, bacon and vinaigrette. “My office is right around the corner and I bring clients to the Brew Werks for meetings,” he says. “The food and atmosphere is great. Very South Bend authentic. When I go there I feel
like I’m contributing to something good.”
