The Shrimp Next Door
Area family raises ocean critters waaaay inland
Who says you can’t raise shrimp in landlocked Indiana? In September of last year the Hoosier Shrimp Farm in Walkerton opened its tanks, becoming the first locally-owned shrimp farm in Michiana. The farm has 16 tanks filled with approximately 6,000 shrimp, all indoors on a 95-acre farmstead. A family business, the farm is owned by grain farmers Ed and Debbie Troike, and run by Jason and Kristen Troike.
The Hoosier Shrimp Farm is a green facility, ensuring that the tank water is free of chemicals. Because of this, the Troikes emphasize, “The taste of this fresh shrimp is unlike any other shrimp.”
Currently, the farm sells to the Harvest Tap in New Carlisle, Indiana, but the Troikes are looking to expand sales to other farm-to-table restaurants. The shrimp are also available for purchase on-site for $15 a pound. The Hoosier Shrimp Farm is open to the public on Fridays from 2 to 6pm, and Saturdays from 1 to 4pm, or by appointment. Fresh produce is also available for purchase.
The Hoosier Shrimp Farm encourages and welcomes you to check out the farm!
