“Real” Old-Fashioned

Ingredients

  • Orange peel
  • 2-3 dashes Angostura bitters
  • 1 teaspoon (or less) simple syrup
  • 1½ ounces decent (not top shelf) rye whiskey
  • Ice
  • 2 ounces club soda

Instructions

  • In a medium rocks glass (9-ounce capacity), add a twist of orange peel, bitters and simple syrup (enough to just cover the orange peel).
With a muddler, gently press down on the rind. The goal is to express the oil, not mash the ingredients together. Add rye. Add ice. Top with club soda.
