Old-Fashioned

I like making this for people who haven’t had one in a long time. Sometimes you forget how simply elegant this cocktail really is. For this drink, I use syrup instead of sugar. It just mixes better. If you can get Wilks & Wilson’s Gomme Syrup (available at City-Wide Liquors in South Bend), I recommend it. Gomme softens the alcohol a bit while giving spirit-forward classics like this a nice, silky texture.
Servings 1 Cocktail

Ingredients

  • ¼ ounce gomme syrup (or regular simple syrup)
  • 3 dashes Angostura aromatic bitters
  • 2 ounces whiskey/rye
  • Ice
  • Orange rind

Instructions

  • Combine syrup, bitters and whiskey in a mixing glass. Add ice. Stir until cold. Strain into tumbler with a couple of large ice cubes. Express oil from orange rind over drink and then drop in the glass.
