Thank you for your interest in contributing to Edible Michiana. We are a member of Edible Communities, a growing, James Beard award–winning, international series of community-based food publications whose mission is to transform the way people shop for, cook, eat and relate to the food that is grown and produced in their area.
Edible Michiana is a quarterly magazine that celebrates the abundance and flavor of local foods across our nine-county region in Northern Indiana and Southwest Michigan. Each season we feature award-winning photography and engaging stories of our farmers and vineyards; food artisans and chefs; food-related businesses and experiences. As a community resource rooted in social awareness on behalf of Michiana’s local food culture, we strengthen the link between farm and table.
Writers:
We rely on freelancers for most of our articles. The editors often make specific assignments based on plans for an issue, but we are always open to hearing ideas for stories. We look for subjects that relate to our mission and are both timely and traditional. While we follow the seasons closely, each issue also has a theme, such as bake, transformation, community, etc.
We are looking for tightly written articles with an original voice that will engage and inform our readers. Refer to previous issues of Edible Michiana for a clear picture of style and to familiarize yourself with topics that have already been covered.
Please submit a written pitch before sending a finished piece. If you have a story idea you think would work well for Edible Michiana, submit a query outlining the subject matter and focus of the article and its approximate length, citing whom you wish to interview, possibly including a sample introductory paragraph or two and listing any relevant experience you have with the subject matter. We often select articles several months to a year ahead of publication, so let us know if there is a specific seasonal focus to your piece. If you have not written for us before, please attach samples or links to your writing.
Queries can be sent via an email to the managing editor: [email protected].
Compensation varies according to length and scope, and payment is sent upon publication. Each contributor receives a copy of the issue with their story. Edible Michiana does not pay expenses, but they are factored into the proposed rate.
Recipes to accompany articles must be original and carefully tested. If they are not original, permission for reprint must be obtained by the submitter. Edible Michiana will not pay associated permission fees.
(If you’re not experienced with recipes, that’s fine! Our recipe editor is a whiz in the kitchen and can come up with a recipe to accompany your article if you have a great idea.)

Submission Guidelines
Submit all articles in Microsoft Word with a minimum of formatting and with only one space following a period. Please remove all hyperlinks to websites. Include a byline with your name, a bio of 30–50 words, a headshot for our website and your contact information, as well as the contact information of any people that we may need to get in touch with to arrange a photo shoot.
Submitting your article is only the first step in the process. Please remain available to participate in the editorial process. It may be necessary for us to edit your piece for length and clarity. We also fact check and copyedit all articles and test recipes. Your patience, flexibility and follow-through are greatly appreciated.
Photographers/Illustrators:
We’re always interested in working with new artists. The best way to connect with us is via an email to the managing editor: [email protected]. Please include a link to a website where we can view examples of your work online.
Compensation varies according to scope and number of destinations (for photographers) and detail and size (for illustrators).
We look forward to hearing from you.
