Core Values at Earth First Farms
Apples top the list of the so-called “dirty dozen”—fruits and vegetables with the highest pesticide residue after harvest. But if conventionally grown apples are a risk to consumers, organic apples can be a risk for growers. Just ask Tom Rosenfeld (right), co-owner with his wife, Denise, of Earth First Farms in Berrien Center, Michigan, and his farm manager, Gonsalo Rangel (left). A few years back, the farm lost most of its crop to an apple blight. But Earth First remains committed to the health and environmental benefits of organic farming. The farm, which was certified organic in 2008, is also dedicated to fair labor practices. Earth First sells community-supported agriculture (CSA) harvest subscriptions in Michiana and Chicago. They also off er a Rent-a-Tree program and U-pick. EarthFirstFarms.com
